Day 22 of my illo 365 resolution!

“It’s strange knowing that I won’t see you tomorrow morning,” she said quietly. “In fact, I think I will miss you.”

He gave a weary smile. “You think?”

She chuckled. It’s awfully romantic, he thought to himself, that they would say their goodbyes in the moonlight. His socks were wet and his shoes felt mushy, but he couldn’t find it in him to move to dry land. He held her hands delicately, as if she would break apart any moment. It was almost as if he was frightened.

Victoria looked away for a moment, pensive. When she turned to stare at him once more, her lips curled into a bittersweet smile. “You will make a girl very happy one day Vincent.”

And the moment she said it, he realized something. That, if he had a choice, he wouldn’t leave. If he had any say, he would tell her that he would be much happier here, with her, instead.

A sweet sense of belonging overcame him, and in that moment, it was hard to hide the fact that he loved her sincerely. Equally so, it was obvious that she felt the same.
